What to expect

What’s happening to my baby?

Rapid growth continues, and your baby will be around 1cm in length by the end of week 7. Its brain is expanding, and the head will look disproportionately large compared to the rest of the body. In addition to its little black eyes, the location of your baby’s ears will start to become visible.

The nervous system is maturing just as the leg and arm buds are developing – little flaps that will become the hands are visible too – and these are filling out with cartilage.

Your baby’s internal organs are diversifying and maturing, and by the end of week 7, the stomach, kidney and lungs will be growing. Its heart will be beating rapidly between 150 and 180 beats per minute.

What’s happening to me?

Blood will suffuse your skin, giving you what many call the “pregnancy glow” – a flushed look even when resting. Observant or experienced friends and family might ask probing questions about a possible pregnancy.

You may feel full of energy at times and may be able to continue your normal physical activity. Conversely, you might feel just as fatigued when things slow down. Keep getting as much rest as possible and listen to your body.
