What to expect

What's happening to my baby?

By week 16 you may notice the first kicks of the strengthening foetus. This is called the quickening, and it's high time you got some bang for your buck! Around this time your baby's ears will have developed enough to properly hear sounds, and its eyes continue to mature enough to sense light with more precision. With the eyelashes and eyebrows that have formed, your baby-to-be has come a long way. Fine motor skills develop enough for your baby to grasp things like the umbilical cord and to make tiny fists, although many movements are uncontrolled. It's around this time, too, when an ultrasound might be able to finally determine whether you'll be having a male or a female.

What's happening to me?

As your belly grows, so too do other symptoms increases constipation, varicose veins and even the dreaded back pain of the third trimester starts to rear its head. Consider trying pregnancy aids such as special pillows or practising some back stretches and exercise to counteract the pain.
