Choosing the right feeding products for your family

As a new parent, it can be tricky knowing exactly what is useful to have for each stage of your feeding journey. Here are some considerations to get you started.

1. Milk feeding through infancy and beyond

Milk is your baby’s first food, and the New Zealand Government’s Infant Feeding Guidelines recommend feeding your baby milk until they are around 6 months old as it meets all of your baby's nutritional requirements.

No matter how you choose to feed your baby in their first 6 months, there are some things that may come in handy. For example, if you’re breastfeeding, you might find it beneficial to have a breast pump available. Breast pumps can help encourage your milk supply if you encounter any challenges, and they can allow you to express breastmilk so you, or someone else, can feed your baby using a cup, syringe, spoon, or bottle if you are unable to feed your baby directly at the breast for any reason.

If you choose to mix feed or formula feed in your baby’s first 6 months, there are many products designed to make your life easier. Handy items can include quality baby bottles, replacement bottle teats, bottle warmers, and sterilisers. Always ensure you follow the guidelines on preparing your baby’s formula and sterilise bottles and teats between uses.

2. Starting solid food

At around 6 months old, your baby’s body goes through some key changes to become ready to eat solid food. Some of these changes you can see, like whether they can sit up with minimal support and are showing interest in food and eating. Other developments aren’t visible, such as their digestive enzymes becoming ready to start handling solid foods. As you introduce new food to your baby, be on the lookout for any allergic reactions.

When you’re starting solid food, you may choose to introduce pureed foods first and graduate to finger foods when your baby has mastered softer textures, or you may prefer to try baby led weaning, where your baby eats a range of appropriately served foods in a variety of textures and shapes from the get-go. Whichever method you choose, opting for nutrient-dense foods is a great idea.

To help your solids journey, you might like to pick up baby bibs, a highchair, cutlery, and an open cup or sippy cup.

3. Eating out and about

Once your little one is eating solids, it’s time to think about eating on the go! If you’re out and about with your baby or toddler, it’s sometimes hard to make sure you’re home for snack time. Having products like reusable food-safe pouches, bento boxes, or water bottles on hand makes meals on the run easy and stress-free.
