Baby-proofing your home

Babies and toddlers are well-known for their ability to get into sticky situations. Imagine – you’re new to world, everything is interesting and new and exciting, and you’re learning to crawl, walk, climb and reach. Your home becomes a playground and a space for experimenting. By getting the basics of baby safety right, you can transform "no" to "yes" as you allow your baby to explore, all the while sound in the knowledge that obvious hazards are avoided. Here are tips to help you baby-proof your home.

1. Get down to your baby’s level

The first step of baby-proofing is identifying potential hazards, and that requires you to think like a baby. So get down on your hands and knees or your belly if you’re able to, or enlist a friend who can get low for you, and look around the room. Remember, as a baby you’re new to movement and every part of the room is exciting. Look for sharp corners or items, dangling cords, exposed power points, toys or appliances with small or detachable parts, unsecured batteries, corded electronics, unstable furniture, low shelves or drawers, storage of chemicals, medicine and other dangerous items, or anything else that could be a problem, keeping in mind that babies and toddlers like to explore with their mouths, bump into things, climb and jump, and use furniture to pull to standing.

2. Make a list, check it twice

Move through each room at baby-level, bumping things, reaching, and generally exploring as they might. As you go, make a list of what you would like to address through babyproofing, or what you are happy to address through close supervision. Some rooms might have a high number of hazards or contain precious items you want to avoid breaking. These rooms might be better off being blocked off completely with a baby safety gate.

3. Watch your baby as they grow

One day they’re crawling, the next they are pulling up to stand using the coffee table. Every day your baby is working on new skills, which means new potential dangers to look out for. Pay attention to the skills your little one is working on so you can reassess your home before they master each new stage. It might feel like you’re adding new measures every week or two at the beginning, but rest assured that as your baby gains control of their body and starts to learn from your what is off-limits, the baby-proofing efforts will eventually wind down.
