Baby, it’s cold outside

When dressing your baby for winter outings, layers are your friend. As a rule of thumb, they should be wearing one more layer than you, as it is harder for them to regulate their temperature.

Most heat is lost through the feet and head. Dress your baby in a beanie and booties. If you’re popping in and out of stores or other homes, try to remove the beanie when inside to avoid overheating.

It’s a good idea to check your baby’s temperature frequently. Measure their temperature by feeling their tummy or back, which should be warm. Their hands and feet will usually be colder than their core, which is normal.

It’s important for you and your baby to get some fresh air each day. You can still take your little one out for a quick stroll on a cold day. Consider using a carrier sling so you can share body warmth. Cover up their hands with mittens.

If strolling with a pram, you can put a blanket over the baby for extra warmth. Make sure it doesn’t cover their face.

How do I know when my baby is too hot?

Keeping your little one warm is essential, but overheating can be dangerous. Some signs they could be too hot to watch out for are:

  • Sweaty or hot on the back of the neck
  • Flushed cheeks
  • Looking uncomfortable
  • A very hot tummy

Your baby may be too cold if their skin seems pale or their lips turn a darker color.

Staying warm overnight

It’s crucial to practice safe sleeping all year round. Try to keep the room at a temperature between 16-20°. Never let your baby sleep wearing a beanie, as it can be dangerous.

If your baby’s skin seems to be drying out in the colder months, consider investing in a humidifier for their nursery. Limit baths because this can irritate the skin, and use a gentle moisturizer after bathing.

Warming up

If your baby gets too cold, you can warm them up by holding them close to you. Putting their hands in your underarms could quickly increase their temperature. Avoid rubbing a cold baby as it might irritate their skin. We're sure you don't need an excuse to hold them tight, but this is the perfect one.
