What to expect

What’s happening to my baby?

Come week 21 your baby is truly resembling a miniature person. It’s incredible to think that just five months ago your baby was a single cell! Most babies by now are over 18cm.

At this stage your baby’s mind is expanding rapidly in concert with its senses. Sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch are all developing and your baby may be testing some of these out in your womb.

What’s happening to me?

The changes are being felt by you, too, as you continue to put on weight in addition to the increasing weight of your baby inside you. Look after your back by taking it easy and sleeping comfortably. Healthy eating and lots of water help too, as they allow your body to stay supple and healthy and recover from the stresses and strains of pregnancy.

The stresses on your digestion and the potential heartburn can be better managed by eating smaller, more frequent meals – just like you did when you were managing morning sickness early in your pregnancy. Be kind to yourself: you’re all your baby’s got!
